Cranford, one of many Union County, New Jersey townships, is a leafy town of about 22,625 according to the 2010 United States Census. The township, incorporated as part of a New Jersey Legislature act in 1871, is said to have been named after the Crane family and in particular John Crane, who built a mill in 1720 along the Rahway River. Cranford was incorporated from portions of the Clark, Linden, Springfield, Union and Westfield townships.

Cranford is a town that is very rich in history. The Cranford Historical Preservation Advisory Board, established in 1993, is designed to help preserve the town’s historic buildings. The Crane-Phillips House, maintained by the Cranford Historical Society, founded in 1927, will be of interest to architectural enthusiasts. Designed in the style of Andrew Jackson Downing, the first American architect, the Victorian cottage now serves as a museum and is operated by the Cranford Historical Society.

The Cranford Township has been the setting of many television shows. In particular, the 2005 film Guess Who, starring Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac, used Cranford as its backdrop.  Also, episodes of the 1990s television show The Adventures of Pete & Pete were also filmed in Cranford.
